In a recent interview, Fanning remarked, “Tom sends me a birthday gift every year and has since that birthday,” recalling how Cruise initiated the custom with an extremely meaningful gift while they were filming “War of the Worlds.”

She remembered how it felt to receive such a wonderful birthday gift from the actor. “Oh, my God, I was so excited,” she said.
It seemed nice for her to go around with her very own flip phone, even if she “didn’t have anybody to call or text at that time.

She said she had observed Cruise’s thoughtfulness ever since they worked on a movie together in 2005. She claimed that ever since they worked on War of the Worlds together, the actor has remembered her birthday. Not only had he remembered, but he had also made sure to send her a gift.
“Every year, and ever since that birthday, Tom has sent me a birthday present,” she said, referring to her recent thirty-first birthday. Yes, she said, praising Cruise, “so thoughtful, really really nice.”
Scott laughed and said, “That’s lovely, he’s never given me anything,” before glancing directly at the camera.
